Summary:
The story, ''The Man Who Walked Between The Towers'' by Mordicai Gerstein is a fascinating story because it is based on a true story. This story is about a young man name, Philippe Petit, who was a street performer in New York City. He rode a unicycle, juggled balls and used fiery torches to perform on the streets. However, Philip's favorite performance was walking and dancing on a wire rope in which he tied between two trees. Philippe Petite then saw, when the twin towers were being made. Then one day, while looking at the twin towers, he thought of walking on a wire in between the twin towers; just like he had done in the Norte Dame Cathedral above his home city Paris. He knew the police would not allow him, but he made a secret plan. In the middle of the night of early August, he and some friends went to the top of the unfinished twin towers. They took three hours to tie the cable in between the towers. As the sun rose, Philippe walked on the wire between the twin towers, and people were astonished, terrified, and saw it as the most beautiful thing they had ever seen. As the police, tried to get Philippe under arrest, Philippe, walked, dance, ran and knelt upon the wire. After Philippe felt satisfied, he turned himself in to the police. The judge, sentenced Philippe to perform in the park. However, Philippe kept performing, and almost fell on one of his performances, but caught himself. Now, the towers are gone, but in great memory, the joyful morning of August 7, 1974, when Philippe Petite walked between the twin towers was still there.
1) I would recommend this book because it is based on a true story, and I know the students would love to hear a story so fascinating as this.
2) The appropriate grade level would be Kindergarten to Fifth grade.
3) I would include this book, in the unit of History, and I would have them do a project, in which describes their most accomplish goal or scariest moment they have ever experience. Then, I would demonstrate a video, in which demonstrates in real life, when Philippe Petit walked in between the twin towers, upon a wire.
