Summary:
In 1803, the United States was still a small young country. The United States at that time only had 17 states, made up by the Union, stretching from the Atlantic coast all the way to the Mississippi River. European countries claimed the rest of the land in North America. However, the Louisiana Purchase extended America by buying the land from France. The purchase of the Louisiana Territory all started because the United States was in need of a river. America needed a good river route to ship goods. The Mississippi River was perfect for it, but France owned the river before they purchased France. The Louisiana Purchase greatly expanded the size of the United States. In fact, it became bigger than any European country. The resources in the Louisiana Territory helped the United States develop major industries. The nation's size, population, and natural resources helped make it a world power. American Indians, African slaves, French and Spanish people made their homes in the Louisiana Territory. Immigrants from Norther Europe and Russia, then migrated there. So, did settlers from the United States.Overtime, these people learned how to live together, despite their differences. The diversity changed the face of America.
Book Evaluation:

2) I would recommend this book to the third graders all the way to the fifth graders.
3) I would use this book in the unit of History. I would have them write create a timeline based on the events, they just learned.
