Summary:
This book was written for the families who were migrating. Millions of African Americans were migrating in search for a better life. Among the families was the little girl's mother and grandmother, whom she is very grateful for. Nevertheless, the story begins in a girl who finds a rope under a tree that her grandmother used, when she use to skip. Her grandfather also used the same rope to tie stuff on top of his car. Her grandfather drove their family from South Carolina to New York City. At that time, the little girl's grandmother had her first daughter. Her daughter was a baby. Therefore, the same rope was used to hang the daughter's diapers. As the little girl grew up, she used the rope to tie on one of her duck toys. The girl's family used the same rope in several ways throughout three generations.
Book Evaluation:
1) I would recommend this book to my class because I think some of them would be able to relate. Perhaps some of my students may not be immigrants, but they may relate in having something valuable that was kept throughout several generations.
2) I would recommend this book to the Kindergartners all through Third grade level.
3) I would use this book in the unit of History. I would have them write an autobiography about something valuable that they posses throughout several generations and have them share it to the class.
